Airmax Compressor Services was registered by David Wharton as a sole proprietorship in December 1995, and began conducting business transactions in February 1996. There was no shop, no warehouse, no fleet of trucks, no staff. David worked out of the garage of his in-laws' home in Burlington.

"The intention was to be on my own and just run a little preventive maintenance outfit, keep a small base of clients, and focus on taking very good care of them. By the end of the first year, I was working seven days a week in order to keep the promises I had made to my clients. A decision had to be made in regard to the future of the company. I didn't want the quality of client care to wane, but if I brought someone in, he would have to be right for me and my clients." Tom Schulte joined Airmax as a partner in May 1997. "Tom was a perfect fit for the company and the customers. He brought skills that would be of great value to our clients; above all, he would prove to be a trustworthy and supportive partner with good business sense and personal integrity."

Airmax Compressor Services was registered as a corporation in the Province of Ontario in January 1998, with David Wharton and Tom Schulte listed as the principal shareholders. "We were offering something new to the manufacturing sector of southern Ontario: cost-effective compressed air equipment maintenance programs. We received feedback that our services were adding value to our customers' companies rather than taking value away from them."
